Kawandi Inspired Workshop

Kawandi = a utility quilt made by the Siddi women, African Diasporas people in India.
What makes Kawandi different from other quilting styles - made from the outside in!
This workshop is focused on reusing fabric and using up scraps that you may already have. A kawandi is made solely by hand quilting and there is no need for a machine. This is the perfect project to slow down, relax your mind and stitch something with a story.
-
Fabric scissors
-
Thimble
-
Needle puller or rubber thimble (optional)
-
Embroidery needles of your choice
-
8 wt or 12wt cotton thread in white or ecru
-
22" x 22" piece of lightweight fabric for backing - quilting cotton is fine
-
21" x 21" (small) or 36" x 36" (large) piece of cotton batting
-
Assorted scraps measuring at least 2" square or bigger
Be sure to include different sizes, colors, and textures in your scrap selections. Lightweight fabrics make it easier to stitch through multiple layers. Be sure to add some shot cottons, plaid, prints and stripes to the mix, as well as a scrap from a personal clothing items or other important textile pieces (maybe your great-aunt Edna’s doily that has been in your drawer for 15+ years, or a special embroidered napkin or handkerchief that is too stained to use but you can’t let it go). Batiks or heavy weight fabrics do not work well for this project.

| Instructor: | Jenni Engleman |
| Instructor Bio: | Jenni (@jenglebelle) has always loved crafting - from making friendship bracelets and potholders as a kid to embroidery and cross stitch as a teen and making quilts and attempting clothes as a young adult. Her love of quilting began as a child helping her great-grandmother make baby quilts for all the grandbabies. They were precious early morning moments that she still cherishes. Jenni’s absolute favorite thing to do is to teach people the super-power of sewing and seeing the joy on their face as they discover their own talent! |
